Thursday, September 2, in the morning:
The first impression of the damage on Hilltop Road. The newspaper delivery guy (white car) got caught in the trench that the rain created across the street.
The asphalt around the drains in the bent of the streets are broken to pieces by the force of the water.
The water undermined the foundation of the road, the asphalt broke into pieces from below.
The sand was washed down along the road and accumulated at the parking lot.
The water went over the parking lot and washed away the soil surrounding the drains and pools at the beach.
When the supporting soil was washed away, the protective boulders at the beach lost their position and will need to be reset.
A big part of the sand along Scott's Beach Club's beach is washed away by the water.
And this is where it started: The water came from Woodhull Landing Road, creating a lake on the lawn of one of our members and finally broke through the protective wall. There was so much water that it undermined the asphalt layer of Hilltop Drive, as can be seen.
The water broke through at two different locations along the wall. Here is the second one viewed from the lawn.
And here from Hilltop Drive. Patches of asphalt are still visible.
Thursday, September 2, in the afternoon:
The Board was active the whole day, interacting with the authorities. As a result, a crew from the Town of Brookhaven came in the afternoon to make the road at least passable again for residents.
The crew removed the loose asphalt patches and refilled the road in a way that residents, utility and emergency cars are able to pass it again.
Thursday, Sep 9, in the morning:
A week has passed, the gravel and cement that has been used to fill the trench and make the road passable holds up..
Our beach at low tide. At high tide, the darker area in front of the stones becomes a lake.
Friday, Sep 24:
On Friday, Sep 24, a Town of Brookhaven crew came and removed some of the sand, but not much. More needs to be removed.
